PICO RIVERA – A teenager joy-riding in his mother’s sport utility vehicle lost control and slammed into the wall of Rivera Middle School’s library, leaving students unable to use the facility, school officials said Wednesday. “You don’t expect to have a car drive into your school library – that’s not a typical occurrence at a school site,” Rivera Principal Andrew Alvidrez said. “We are looking into what we need to do next.” The impact of the crash knocked books across the room, crumbled shelves and spread concrete and wood debris all over the library, Alvidrez said. Administrators at the school on Citronell Street closed the library, likely through the rest of this week. Alvidrez estimated it could cost anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 to repair the damaged wall. However, officials Wednesday were seeking permission from a structural engineer to operate one half of the library that did not sustain damage. If the engineer approves it, half of the library might open this afternoon. “Otherwise, we will move books to another room,” said Alvidrez. For the students, many of whom are in an accelerated reading program, having daily access to the library is essential, sixth-grade teacher Lourdes Torres said. “This is definitely a loss. The kids here count on their library,” she said. Sixth-grade student Marlee Rangel called the loss of library “kind of harsh.” “Kids here really need to check out books from the library,” she said. Police said they believe the 17-year-old boy involved in the crash was driving his mother’s Ford Explorer. He was driving on Danbridge Street when he lost control of the vehicle at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy Mark Contreras of the sheriff’s Pico Rivera Station. The boy left the scene. However, after deputies contacted the vehicle’s registered owner, the boy and one of his parents returned to the crash scene, said Contreras. He was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run and was released to his parents’ custody. email@example.com (562)698-0955, Ext. 3028 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREWalnut’s Malik Khouzam voted Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. QPR are bottom of the table and struggling – but they are favourites to win Monday’s clash with Aston Villa at Loftus Road.Rangers haven’t won in five Premier League matches and Harry Redknapp’s side remain 2/1 to finish bottom and 4/7 to be relegated. But despite the defeat, last Sunday’s showing against Liverpool was their strongest performance of the season so far and we reckon they can record just a second league success of the campaign. They are 7/5 to pick up all three points, with Villa 12/5 and the draw 11/5.Despite impressive wins against Liverpool and Stoke in the opening weeks of the season, Villa have gone off the boil and if QPR repeat the commitment they showed last time out, they will surely run out winners.Eduardo Vargas is the 5/1 favourite to open the scoring after netting twice last week and he is 7/1 to score back-to-back-braces and 9/5 to score at any time during the game.Vargas looks a big price at 14/1 to be named the man of the match, while Leroy Fer is likely to be a handful in midfield and is an attractive 8/1 with BetVictor. For all your weekend odds check out betvictor.com.Be lucky.CharlieFollow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook
10 April 2013 South African retailer Pick n Pay is expanding its presence in Zimbabwe through its partnership with TM Supermarkets, a subsidiary of Meikles Limited, by investing US$25-million to upgrade the chain to international standards. There are 50 TM Supermarkets across Zimbabwe, including two which already carry the Pick n Pay name at the Kamfinsa and Westgate shopping centres in the country’s capital, Harare. Pick n Pay has owned a 49% stake of TM Supermarkets since November 2010, and has provided operational support through a skills development programme to equip the Zimbabwean local team with international best practice. “[It is] wonderful news for stakeholders as it will re-position TM Supermarkets as a leader in a very competitive industry,” executive chairperson of Meikles Limited, John Moxon, said in a statement last week. “Precise timelines are not yet finalised but we shall both renovate current stores throughout the country and open new ones initially in Harare, to world-class standards.” The investment and refurbishment follows the chain’s six-fold increase in profits through improved management practices and better stock control, merchandising and buying strategies. “The $25-million investment, together with a substantial internal generation of cash from increased earnings, will soon be available for the renovation of existing supermarkets and the addition of new opportunities,” Moxon said. The performance of the two existing Pick n Pay stores also contributed to the chain’s positive bottom line, and helped enable the refurbishment. “These programmes will be accelerated substantially in 2013.” Pick n Pay currently operates 95 stores in Africa, the latest of which was opened in Luanshya in Zambia on 22 March. Then, depending on your computer (Mac or PC), you can either download the Windows-only desktop client or head over to the online service at quanp.net. Unfortunately, non-Windows users using the online service miss out on the sexiest thing about this new service: the 3D file browser. For Windows UsersIn the Windows desktop client, you browse through your files using its visually stunning interface. Although pretty, visual browsing isn’t always the most efficient way to locate a particular file, so quanp’s software also lets you search by keyword, tag, date, and more. The client even includes a basic reader for Microsoft Office files so you can see the content without having to launch the office software. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts Sexy, But Useful? For the most part, a lot of what makes quanp fun to use is its visual eye candy. However, for users of the free Windows Live service, there may be some hesitation in switching. Although lacking a drag-and-drop widget of its own, Windows Live users can upload both photos and videos to online services using Photo Gallery software – and not just to the online service provided by Windows Live, but to flickr, Facebook, and YouTube as well (the last two via plugins). They can also tag files, identify faces, edit photos, and browse through files – just not in glorious 3D. Of course there are plenty of other online storage services out there, but Windows Live is the most apt comparison since it, like quanp, is a combination of desktop software and an online component – a “software + services” arrangement. Most other online storage services either don’t offer desktop tools at all or don’t offer tools that also function as a way to elegantly browse and edit your files. To determine if quanp is the better choice for you, think about whether you need to upload more than just photos or videos – if so, then quanp will work (although visual search of docs isn’t quite as fun). Also of note, quanp offers 10 GB to Windows Live’s 25 GB. However, the company plans to offer graded pricing in the future for additional storage, but no official decision has yet been made on exactly what that will be.Of course, for some early adopters, “sexy” beats “practical” any day. If that describes you, then you should sign up for the quanp beta here. (But sorry world – the beta is U.S.-only!) Quanp, a new service from office electronics company Ricoh, has just launched a beta of their online storage system which offers an interesting twist to the usual backup services: a visual search tool that displays your data in 3D. The 3D viewer is actually a desktop application designed for Windows PCs, but Mac users aren’t entirely out of luck – there is an online version of the service, too. Once we got past the site’s terrible name (short for “quantum paper” – huh?) and focused on what it was offering, we were intrigued. Using a desktop widget called quanp drop, you simply drag-and-drop files from your computer to the online service, be them documents, photos, mp3s, or whatever else you want. It’s a similar concept to the widget used by file-sharing service Dropbox; but unlike the Dropbox widget, installed via an executable file, quanp’s widget is powered by Adobe AIR. You can even pick which style you want to use for your icon.
